An earthquake has rocked Indonesia this morning, a natural phenomena not likely noticed by the Australians that were still stumbling through the streets of Kuta at 4am.
Geoscience Australia showed two different earthquake epicentres, one with a magnitude of 7.0, the other with a magnitude of 6.1, both taking place before sunrise this morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the region, however geologists are researching whether or not the tremors might be related to the hundreds of thousands of Australian amateur who have just exited their local footy competitions as the regular season concludes to make way for ‘the good teams’ playing finals.
Footage from Bali appeared to show a hotel evacuated with people standing outside in the streets, in scenes reminiscent of Schoolies week, or basically any Mad Monday involving suburban Australian football clubs.
A spokesperson from Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), says the earthquake could very well be related to the fact that the most unfit athletes still wriggling on club jerseys in both rugby, rugby league and Aussie rules suddenly arrived in their country yesterday.
“These aren’t ‘athletes’ per say” said the Indonesian spokesperson.
“These are what we describe as ‘good clubmen’ – the first athletes to pay the deposit for the end-of-season trip, but the last to pay their registration fees and insurance at the start of the season”
“These are type of tourist that have the ability to cause Indonesian hotels to shake”
“And certainly have the ability to cause gridlock traffic and incite civil unrest on the streets of our tourism precincts”
