Citizens of the nation of Australia have today been given a little bit of clarity around why Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison decided to hang around parliament for an extra 18 months after being booted from the top job.
Traditionally most former Prime Minister’s bow out of parliament after being knocked off the throne, given their inability to shrink their ego and deal with the relevancy deficiency syndrome that comes with a demotion to the back seats of parliament house.
While some do hang around because they actually want to advocate for the people who voted for them in their local electorate, it’s fair to say Scott Morrison was never really too fussed.
So, despite the understandable perks of playing candy crush on the company dollar, many were left wondering why Scotty was hanging around in parliament for so long.
However, we now have the answer, with Morrison confirming he was just waiting for the anti-lobbying period to finish before taking plum jobs in the defence industry, who obviously were pretty happy with the $400 billion Scott signed off on as part of the AUKUS deal.
That deal saw Australia commit to spending the eye watering amount of money on 8 nuclear powered submarines that won’t arrive till 2050 and will likely be completely useless if our pensive but powerful neighbour up north decide they’ve had enough.
Given the significant digits that will be wired to some of the most powerful companies in the world as a result, anyone involved on the government side of things has obviously made themselves a few friends.
But, if you are like Scott, and in charge of a portfolio or responsible for big decisions, you have to wait a whole 18 months before you take a job with the industry you were giving money too.
So, rather than go and earn a crust doing something else, it’s now clear Scott Morrison waited the 18 months out on the back bench, before taking a highly paid Christmas break and then accepting some cushy consultancy gigs in the defence industry.
While the overseas companies are obviously based overseas, Morrison has confirmed he’ll be able to work from Australia so he can spend more time with family – which does kind of make you ponder whether he’s going to be doing any work, or whether he’s being compensated for his prior decisions.
Regardless of what it is he’s being compensated for, given he’s track record it’s highly likely Morrison will be completely transparent about the situation.
More to come.
