When Kyle Chan decided he’d become a lawyer, he figured he would be setting himself up for the finer things in life.
A prodigious violin player as a child, in 2011 Kyle decided he’d forgo the offer of music scholarships at top conservatoriums around the country to instead study law at the Royal Betoota University.
Fast forward 22 years, and Kyle’s choice to skip the admirable life of being an artist to embark on a stable career in law reportedly still isn’t paying off, as he battles with the current cost of living crisis.
Standing in front of the shelves at the Woolies Metro in downtown Betoota, Kyle told The Advocate that he never predicted that his nightly shop would cause him so much anxiety, as he lamented the cost of every single item in his basket.
“Jar of honey? $10. Packet of chips? $10. Five pissy little honey soy chicken kebabs? $10. Is there anything in this supermarket that’ll feed me for more than a day for under $10?!” Kyle asked our reporter.
“Honestly put eight things in your trolley and you’re staring at a total of $100 at the check out, I can see why previously law abiding citizens are having a crack at the odd shoplift here and there.”
Crawling towards pay day with only $9 in his everyday account, Kyle decided he’d have to bring back an old trusty recipe that kept him fed throughout his uni years.
After nabbing 500g of the cheapest mince he could find that wasn’t of the pet food variety, Kyle swung past the canned vegetable aisle to pick up a tin of homebrand tomatoes that would only cost him 96 cents.
“Guess I’m eating spag bol tonight, when times are tough you have to go back to the classics.”
“Now if I can find some macaroni elbows under $2 then I’m sorted, if not I’ll just have to have it on toast. I think I’ve got an old jar of Italian seasoning at home, but I might as well rip a few basil leaves out of the fresh produce fridge.”
“Honestly stuff these supermarket bastards, I have no idea how the people with families are doing it!”
