An Irish lad on a working holiday visa is struggling to identify his own countrymen now that Guinness has become cool in Australia.
Once upon a time, spotting a fellow Irishman Down Under would have been an easy task for 25 year old Tyrone Doyle. But now, with the rise of Guinness as the drink du jour among Europe loving hipsters across the country, Tyrone finds himself lost in pubs across Melbourne.
“It’s a bloody identity crisis!” he confessed over a pint of the black stuff.
“Back in the day, you could spot an Irishman from a mile away with his Guinness in hand. But now, everyone’s drinking it, this is a bloody disaster for my networking opportunities in the world of construction.”
With trendy bars and pubs across Melbourne proudly pouring pints of the Irish nectar, and with the “split the G trend” going viral on tiktok, the once-reliable litmus test for spotting fellow Irish countrymen has been rendered useless.
