A plasma TV that was picked up off the side of the road is worth its weight in gold tonight as a university share house rugs up for winter.
Stone broke and stone cold, the five flatmates of 116 Kevin-Campion Street are tucking into their favourite cheap Friday night activity, Settlers of Catan.
Sitting on pillows around a coffee table, which was also a find from a recent street bounty, the students are keeping warm thanks to the flickering pixel flames coming from a TV.
“Do we want the outdoor campfire tonight or shall we do the Christmassy one?” bio-engineering student Tate Hadley asked his flatmates.
“Or I found this cool mediaeval one, it’s got Game of Thrones vibes.”
Having spent every night this winter warding off cases of hypothermia, the students have told The Advocate one hot tip to keeping internal organs from completely freezing up is to drink bargain bin wine.
“Two glasses of this and you start to feel the tannins make it to your fingertips,” 24-year-old nursing student Audrey Zhang told our reporter.
“The cheaper the better, the real thick stuff can also help clear your nostrils.”
Having either bought or stolen a bottle each from the local Liquorland, the share house are reportedly planning on getting munted tonight so they can sleep easy in their heater-less rooms.
“We might make mulled wine later, just simmer two bottles in a pot with a pinch of allspice powder and a few chilli flakes.”
“Plus it gives us an excuse to turn the stove on, feeling the heat from the electric hotplate tickle your chin hairs really is the kind of comfort we’ve been relying on this winter.”
