Like everyone else in the free world, local Queenslander Milton Castlemaine (59), has been glued to the news for the last 48 hours.
Not because he usually gives a fuck about global events, but he does find it rather interesting that former US President Donald Trump almost had his head blown off by an AR-15.
US politics is not usually what Milton spends his time reading about, especially at this time of the year.
But again, an assassination attempt on a Presidential candidate is pretty big news, regardless of what’s happening on the back page.
But with an electric night of rugby league ahead of him tomorrow, Milton simply has to tun all of his attention to the State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium.
“Okay” says Milton, as throws his newspaper in the bin.
“That’s enough of that. The old fellas is still breathing. Close call but the show goes on.”
The brief circuit breaker of international news has interrupted the usual fixation that Milton has on State Of Origin football in the winter months. And aside from the last couple days of reading American news updates about shooter angles and FBI reports, the last fortnight has been spent thinking about nothing else but that fact that those New South Wales bastards were able to storm home for victory over Queensland in Game II.
But now he’s moved on from that.
So has the rest of Queensland.
Trump’s assassination attempt has been put to bed so that people of the deep north can focus on things that actually matter to them.
Milton will not think about US politics again until he finds out the result of this Federal Election in November. Because Queensland have these cocky Blues right where they want them.
“There’s gonna be a real public execution happening in Suncorp tomorrow night.” says Milton.
“And I daresay a lot more blood”
“And it won’t be a close shave either. The Maroons will be hitting them square in the ribs for eighty minutes. It’s an Origin decider at Suncorp, we aren’t gonna be grazing ears out there.”
