The head honchos of Queensland Rugby League have this evening pulled off a sensational coup.

In a stunning development from Caxton Street, just metres from the spiritual home of State of Origin, the allotted referee for tonight’s game has been locked in at the Caxton Hotel.

Set to take the whistle for the decider in the 2024 series, Ashley Klein was reportedly snatched off the main drag by Queensland officials, and tied to a chair in the famous Caxton Hotel.

The never seen before move is part of an attempt to install Cameron Smith, aka Queensland’s greatest ever referee into the hot seat tonight.

With Klein being kept occupied by bartenders and punters who couldn’t get tickets to tonight’s game, Smith has just entered Lang Park and is looking set to take over officiating duties at kick off.

It’s believed Channel 9 are keen to experiment and have Cameron Smith mic’ed up while he penalises NSW, and officiates the game.

It’s the first time Smith has officiated a game of rugby league since he retired.

If the Melbourne Storm great can orchestrate another Queensland win, it’s believed he will be the next, and first ever player-referee, appointed to the hallowed status of Immortal.

More to come.
