In a shocking display of global cultural imperialism, legendary Glaswegan band Oasis, widely known for their attempt at recreating the sonic magic of Brisbane’s own Powderfinger, has announced two massive shows in Australia for 2025.
According to recent reports, the Gallagher brothers have set their sights on Sydney’s Accor Stadium and Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium. Some might say they’re merely following in the wake of real rock royalty. Powerfinger has played at the MCG, which is bigger than both those stadiums combined.
With fans already getting misty-eyed at the thought of hearing the band’s irresistibly pedestrian tunes like Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger, it’s clear that Australia is in for a tribute act like no other. Tickets for these events are expected to sell out fast, with the Gallaghers drawing crowds eager to relive what many believe are the second-best hits of the 90s. Bank managers are at the ready for fans to remortgage their homes to secure their spot at the show.
The Oasis world tour, marking their first Australian performance in 19 years, coincides with the 30th anniversary of Definitely Maybe, which, according to the brothers, “has nothing to do with the Australian rock sound we were trying to imitate.” Fans, however, seem to be eagerly awaiting this chance to witness the imitation game live, even if Powderfinger has already done it better.
The news comes as Powerfinger reportedly turn down a $1.65bn offer to return for a limit reunion tour.
