Local entrepreneur has taken to LinkedIn today with some wise words of inspiration for his 2056 followers, after coming to the conclusion that dealing with the grief of losing a beloved family pet is just like running a business.
Taking to his laptop mid burial, Arthur Jacobs, 33, let his fingers fly free as he quickly smashed out a beautiful analogy that was sure to get at least 100 likes.
‘Today, I experienced something I never thought I’d have to endure. Our family dog, Mr Noodles was brutally run over by a semi-trailer when he ran out of the house this morning. The grief hit hard, just like the semi trailer, but strangely, I realised how much running a business had unknowingly prepared me for handling this moment.
Business teaches you resilience. You face setbacks, disappointments, and unexpected losses, and you have to get up and keep moving. In the same way, today I had to pick myself up emotionally, support my family, and find a way to move forward, despite the heartbreak.
It also taught me how to manage stress and stay calm in chaos. Dealing with clients, deadlines, and the unpredictability of running a company has built my emotional endurance. While nothing prepares you fully for personal tragedy, those skills helped me process the grief without completely breaking down.
Lastly, business taught me perspective. Just like in work, where I’ve learned to focus on the bigger picture when things go wrong, I know that while this loss is incredibly painful, we still have so much to be grateful for.
I’m sharing this to highlight how the lessons we learn in business can apply to life’s most difficult moments. Grief is inevitable, but it’s how we handle it that defines us.’
