Sarah Drummond (28), is curled up on her couch, processing the financial fallout from her inter-state bestie Emma’s whirlwind weekend visiting her in Melbourne.
“I love Emma, but damn, we spent a lot,” Sarah sighs.
“It all started so low-key,” she recalls, eyes still glazed from the 48-hour blur of drinks, brunches, and chaotic dance floors. “We kicked off Friday with a $75 feed-me menu—added cocktails and oysters for fun. Then I thought, ‘let’s hit a couple of cute bars.’ Next thing you know, it’s 2am, we’re on a rooftop, screaming along to Chappell Roan, and ordering espresso martinis like water.”
Saturday didn’t slow down. The day began with almond lattes and smashed avo, followed by a ‘quick browse’ of Chapel Street boutiques, where Emma convinced Sarah to drop $400 on a vintage handbag, calling it an ‘investment piece’.
“We were wrecked after shopping,” Sarah says. “So naturally, we got some gnocchi and a bottle of rosé to ‘refuel’.’”
By Saturday night, things spiraled fast. The pair splurged on nightclub cover charges, multiple vodka sodas, and a regrettable round of Jäger bombs before taking a surge-priced Uber home.
“I kept telling myself, I’ll deal with it later,’” Sarah admits. “But by Sunday afternoon, I was staring at my bank app, praying it was a glitch.”
Emma, before departing for her Sunday night flight back to Sydney, promised to “totally return the favour” when Sarah visits her.“I’ll have to save for three months,” Sarah sighs. “But yeah, I guess I’ll go.”
