After nearly five years of self-discovery, Taylor O’Sullivan, a 30-year-old Betoota Grove native, has made the classic decision to stay just one more year in Berlin.
Though he’s well aware that 30 is the hard limit for the German working holiday visa, Taylor has declared he’s not ready for the rigidity of a real job just yet.
A former media studies grad, Taylor initially arrived in Berlin for a six-month sabbatical, only to become firmly planted in the city’s cafe and bar scene, where he can coast by with a heavy Australian accent and no real grasp of German.
“Could I go home and get a 9-to-5?” he asked in a text to his mates.
“Technically, yes, but spiritually, no. Berlin’s just got that vibe, you know?” Taylor’s family has been patiently waiting for him to rejoin the real world, but he’s assured them that his creative endeavours in Berlin will pay off someday. Even if they don’t, it doesn’t matter.
When pressed for details on these endeavours, he mentions a photography project that’s been in the concept phase since 2019.
Meanwhile, his mates back in Betoota remain skeptical.
“He doesn’t want to come back and ‘join the matrix’, you know, find a girl, buy a flat, get a dog, have a baby, have mum and dad just come out of the sky with the silver hand and buy them a house. The kind of stuff we all have to suffer at some point,” said one friend.
“Can you believe he’s not even flying over to London this weekend to watch the Wallabies. Who is this guy?”
More to come.
