The Newcastle Sydney and Wollongong (NSW) Government has today issued an ultimatum to the state’s nurses and midwives.
With the sectors striking over their pay and conditions, NSW Health Minister Ryan Park has revealed there’s a simple fix if they wanna get paid.
“Hire a few more blokes,” said Minister Park.
“If you wanna get paid like a man, then hire a few more men,” he laughed.
Park’s demand comes after nurses and midwives hit the streets yesterday to protest their substandard pay and conditions.
The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) had been negotiating a 10.5% pay rise for the sector given they workload and hours they face – and was left furious after the police were just hand balled a juicy 40% bump.
Speaking to The Advocate a spokesperson for the NSWNMA explained that the cop’s pay rise was quite hard to cop.
“Yeah, given we save people’s lives, deal with them at their lowest points, act as de-facto mental health workers, oh and deliver tax-paying human beings into the world – all while working shifts that most people could never hack,” she began.
“Feels a bit of a kick in the teeth for the cops to just get given 40%.”
“But hey, there’s a few more blokes in the police force, so it makes sense.”
“If we want to be paid like a man, we need to get a bunch more men in the industry,” said the spokesperson about the fact that male dominated industries are clearly much better remunerated across the board.
That’s a sentiment that Minster Park agrees with.
“Glad to see the ladies are finally getting it haha” he said.
