A Melbourne couple hit a pivotal milestone in their relationship today after capturing the sacred “pensive boyfriend at gallery” Instagram shot.

Vivian Vo (24), a self-described “art lover” with an Instagram feed curated to resemble a modern art exhibit, successfully coaxed her boyfriend, Felix Pearce (26), into looking like he knew who Yayoi Kusama was at the National Gallery of Victoria.

“I told him to stand slightly off-centre, furrow his brow a bit, and act like the painting had just changed his entire worldview,” Vivian explained, scrolling through 15 slightly blurry takes of Felix pretending to care about an abstract piece titled No. Green. No. I.

The scene reportedly took place during a visit to the Fragmented Realities: The Power of Abstraction exhibit, with Felix donning a denim jacket that Vivian claimed gave him “some tasteful edge.”

“I don’t know, it’s literally just a canvas with some green—what’s it meant to mean?” Felix said to Vivian.

Despite his initial protests, Felix eventually leaned into his role.

The couple’s efforts did not go unnoticed, with other gallery patrons briefly mistaking Felix for someone who genuinely cared about Japanese contemporary art. The photo is expected to appear on Vivian’s Instagram story later, likely accompanied by a 30-second snippet of a Phoebe Bridgers song she spent an hour picking out.

More to come.
