In news that won’t surprise anyone, Germans take all forms of recreational walking quite seriously.
This story comes after another busy weekend on the footpaths of Betoota, as locals and tourists alike basked in the recent run of glorious weather.
As hundreds of families, Tinder dates, and alcoholics having “a sober weekend” hit the Betoota Lake Lighthouse walk to check out the sunny vista, one pair of tourists was spotted in hiking gear fit for the Overland Track.
Taking on the 900m walk fully decked out with walking poles, waterproof boots, and camelpaks filled with the Aldi version of Hydralyte, Hans Vogel and Anja Schneider from Leipzig took to the footpath like they were about to embark on a five-day hike along the Rothaarsteig Trail through Central Germany.
Speaking to one local Betoota woman who was doing the walk alongside her favourite cooking podcast, the sight of friendly Germans breaking land speed records just to reach Betoota’s fifth most popular tourist attraction was quite a giggle.
“Yeah, they were really powering along. I don’t think they realise the whole walk is a 15-minute round trip,” local CWA baking champion Sue Merrell told The Advocate.
“I hope they know there’s not much to look at when they get to the end, just a few old rusty cannons from the war and a rock that all the teenagers do nangs at.”
“At least if they run out of water, there’s a bloody kiosk inside the lighthouse. Maybe they can suck on a rainbow paddle pop for the first time.”
More to come.
