A 26-year old Ivy League graduate has been named as the lead suspect of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, after an anonymous tip off to the police.
Luigi Mangione, which sounds like an Italian character written by J.K Rowling, was apprehended by police in a McDonalds in Altoona after a customer recognised him from the photos released to the public and called 911.
Mangione was found to be carrying a 3D printed gun with a suppressor that were ‘both consistent with the weapon used in the murder’ as well as a three page manifesto listing grievances against the healthcare industry, leading many to believe he wanted to be captured.
Since the details have been leased, internet sleuths have discovered Mangione’s X profile, the last artist he listened to on Spotify (Charli XCX) and a Goodreads account, which includes a favourable review of Theodore Kaczynski’s Unambomber manifesto.
Kaczynski too believed that violence was the only way to draw others to pay attention to his critique, when words were insufficient.
However, due to Mangione being both well educated and privileged, his defence lawyers argue that it’s simply not right to arrest such a promising young man with a bright future ahead of him.
Especially for only twenty minutes of action.
His lawyers are also arguing that one mistake shouldn’t ruin his life, and that he ultimately couldn’t help himself, as ‘boys will be boys.’
More to come.
