As the world seems to grow increasingly divided as billionaire oligarchs amp up their efforts to infiltrate governments, media, and social media platforms, it can be confirmed that everything would be a lot better if Lord of The Rings was trending again, if not for some much needed escapism but also the wholesome portrayal of male friendships.
The fantasy trilogy, which made New Zealand famous for something other than those sheep rumours, has a special place in many millennial’s hearts, who remember the day they entered the cinema to watch it for the first time.
Comparing blockbusters now, which heavily feature CGI and repetitive formulas, Lord Of The Rings still holds strong as a series that was clearly made by a director who sincerely cared about the story he was telling.
And though the trilogy certainly doesn’t pass the Bechdel test, with none of the female characters ever once talking to each other, the Lord of The Rings trilogy stands as one of the best depictions of fraternity amongst men, with characters having no qualms talking about their feelings, showing compassion, and expressing their love for each other through affection and tears.
Maybe, instead of spending hours doomscrolling on social media and getting enraged at rarebit articles that are deliberately written to incite draw your attention away from the fact that the only dangerous minority is the extremely rich, we should all just give our homies a little kiss on the forehead.
More to come.
