After more than 25 years, the Australian cult classic Two Hands is finally getting a sequel, set right where it all began.
The film, which catapulted Heath Ledger to stardom, became an icon of Australian cinema.
Now, with a new generation of filmmakers behind it, the sequel is ready to rekindle the energy, grit, and heart that made the original a beloved cult classic.
Set in modern-day Kings Cross, the Two Hands sequel aims to capture the new spirit of the once-grimy red-light district.
The film follows 20-year-old Jack, son of Jimmy – played by Heath Ledger in the first film – as he tries to trace his deceased father’s roots as a young nightclub security guard in late-90s Kings Cross.
Questions have already been raised by critics at pre-screenings of the film, with many saying that the majority of the movie was just footage of a 20-year-old guy desperately trying to find a place that serves beer after 8 pm while dodging French dudes on bikes doing UberEats.
“It was a little slow compared to the first movie, I must say. Definitely goes to show just how far Kings Cross has fallen since 1999,” said Alexi Price (36), a local film critic.
The creators of the sequel claim that they wanted to represent modern-day Kings Cross as accurately as possible.
“We really wanted to illustrate the dystopian, soulless vibe of the Cross in 2025,” said Guy Young (39), the director of the film.
“The pain Jack, the protagonist, undergoes throughout the film in his futile attempt to just have a cold beer somewhere in the Cross will surely be relatable to many young people watching the film.”With only one more week until its commercial release, Two Hands 2 will most definitely be a local hit.
