At one o’clock last Saturday morning, a local rugby fan threw caution to the wind and decided to stay up until fourish to watch the down-on-their-luck Qantas Wallabies take on the Springboks.
Matthew Longford-Coleman likened staying up that late to see the men in gold play away to gambling – saying that it could be great or it could be bad.
“After the last loss, Coach Cheika urged all us Wallabies fans to ‘keep the faith’ so I am,” he said.
“But yeah. Throwing a two-man cut out pass on our line inside the first minute. That was hard. Honestly, that little island of hair on Michael’s forehead’s getting more and more isolated by the day. You can’t prepare for things like that,”
“It only got worse. Except for Genia’s try. That was hardcore. Pangs of Gregan, I tell you. Anyway, to be honest with you, I don’t know how much faith left I have to give. But the next game is at 9:40am on a Sunday so I’ll be getting around that one hundred percent.”
The Advocate spoke to Michael Cheika a short time ago via telephone, where he explained that the team is rebuilding and looking toward the future.
The Coogee Cannonball also revealed that now the team is currently ranked number seven in the world, the lowest in history, the team can now enjoy a new status.
“We’re the underdogs now and Australia loves the underdog,” he said.
“Now that Scotland is ranked higher than us, a team once described as the Fiji of the Northern Hemisphere, we can only look up from here,”
“While I know that the nation always gets behind the underdog, I also understand that they only get behind underdogs that win so expect a big game from us against the Argies on Sunday. Also, please don’t be afraid if you’ve just dropped $10k on World Cup tickets, flights and accommodation because we are going to win the World Cup,”
