A local master of ceremonies Keiran Bruny (44) has today attempted to mislead 100 funeral attendees into thinking that he was close mates with a recently deceased local bank teller, Bruce Hinchman (96).
Despite their 52-year age gap and the fact that no one in Bruce’s family knew who Keiran was until they were introduced to him at a pre-rehearsal three days ago, the secular funeral celebrant is trying to act like he knew ‘old Brucey’ quite well.
“He was a great man. A loyal mate. A distinguished world war II veteran. Everyone will tell you the same thing about old Brucey” says Keiran, who accidentally mispronounced Bruce’s granddaughter Siobhan’s name three times throughout the ceremony.
While recounting a classic anecdote about something Brucey did while working as a mailman thirty-years before he was born, Keiran makes a point of saying that while he was a scallywag, it was stories like this that really epitomised the man.
“That’s who he was” says Keiran, who has been sitting next to Brucey’s wife, Wendy in between speeches from actual family members.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Keiran implored all guests to join him and the rest of the family at the local Lord Kidman Hotel afterwards for a wake.
“I’ll be having one for Brucey, I hope you’ll join me” he said.
“And the family”
