Former NSW Blues Captain Paul Gallen will take on retired UFC fighter Mark Hunt tomorrow night – in what many say will be a fight that comes down to one punch.
The pre-match hype has reached boiling point today, as Mark Hunt took a swing at Paul Gallen aduring a heated weigh-in, before being seperated by a terrified promoter ‘Gorgeous’ George Rose.
Ahead of his first appearance in the square circle in 20 years, the Super Samoan weighed in at 127.14kg while the Cronulla Sharks great came in nearly 25kg lighter at 103.66kg.
One man that may want to see Gallen go down with a KO more than most is his former State Of Origin rival, former Queensland Legend Nate Myles.
Myles was the first bloke anyone saw cop a clean punch from Gallen after a coward punch in the 39th minute of Origin game one, 2013. Myles eventually went down after the side-swipe turned into a one-two combo that resulted in the swift ban on closed fists in the iconic rugby league comp.
7 years later, and Gallen has continued to climb the ranks as a fighter. Firstly, knocking out a 45 year old Hopoate in early 2019 – and tying with Barry Hall later in the year.
Myles, who has never been given the chance for a fair fight against Gallen has surprised no one today by joining the Mark Hunt training team.
Both Myles and Hunt were spotted this afternoon bonding over a foot race on Coogee Beach, culminating in a salty hug between the two retired sportsmen in the surf.
Boxing experts says that seeing two men from completely different backgrounds becoming close friends over a playful training montage ahead of a boxing match against a shared enemy, has just tipped the odds.
“This kind of playful training montage is the last thing Gallen needs” says boxing commentator Steve ‘Blocka’ Roach.
“Now Hunt is gonna be entering that ring with the fury of two men”
Jeff Fenech agrees, the former great says that seeing a black guy and a white guy hugging on the beach like that means things are getting serious.
“Gal might have a jaw made of titanium. But it’s gonna be tested tomorrow night”
