More than 1 million Sydney residents have been told to stay home in what the NSW Premier is refusing to call a lockdown.
Four specific local councils areas are affected by the new rules that were announced today, as the city’s most recent outbreak spreads to several suburbs.
The new restrictions start from 11:59pm tonight and will last until the same time next week. Anyone who lives or has worked in these suburbs in the past fortnight — either full-time or part-time — can only leave their home for four reasons. Either, shopping for food or other essential goods and services, medical care or compassionate needs, exercise outdoors in groups of 10 or fewer, essential work, or education, where you cannot work or study from home
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has not said this is a lockdown, it’s just a stay at home order, that everyone in these suburbs have to follow, or be fined by the cops.
While the lockdown-obsessed Victorians are demanding that NSW classify these new restrictions as a ‘hard lockdown’ to make themselves feel better about their horrible pandemic-management – the people of Sydney appear to be just as willing as their politicians to not give it that label.
“This is basically the same as the time they closed down all the nightclubs” says local Bondi resident, Camilla Ksubi.
“We are used to the state government restricting trade hours on businesses and policing the social lives of residents”
“I’m basically looking at this like the lock-out-laws have been extended to daylight hours for the next week”
Double Bay resident Malcolm Matteo (55) agrees.
“In fact, when you look at the stats. The lockout laws were introduced in response to two alcohol-fuelled-violence-related deaths over a three year period”
“Out of millions of the young people that used to party in Sydney”
“So it kind of feels like this new stay-at-home-order is way more justified given the stats on community transmission”
“I’m much more inclined to trust my Premier when I know the new legislation isn’t being drafted up by casino and property developers. Not like when that Happy Clapper was in charge”
For anyone living in Greater Sydney (not including the four councis affected by stay-at-home-orders), the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains as well as Wollongong and Shellharbour – Visitors to households will be limited to five guests, including children
