Though the debate between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and opposition leader Anthony Albanese was largely unknown to anyone other than Sky News enthusiasts, quotes from the showdown have quickly spread, and it appears that Morrison has yet again, put his foot in his mouth.
This comes as quite the embarrassment as not only was he playing on his own turf but he also had a support team to help him look his best, including a very biased camera crew who made sure Albanese’s responses were, as Kevin Rudd succinctly put it, ‘superimposed with critical reactions from the audience.’
However, this leg up has done little to help the Prime Minister, as snippets from the debate were shared across multiple social media platforms, including one response to a punter’s question that stood out above the rest, and not for the right reasons.
The clip, which has earned itself a few thousand shares on Twitter within hours, shows an elderly woman standing up with the help of someone who appears to be her grand daughter, feebly outstretching a liver spotted hand towards a microphone and delivering a hard hitting question.
“As…someone..who is…in…aged care…I don’t think…there’s..enough support.” The woman was able to croak.
“We…only…have one staff…*cough*..member…for…forty…of us…”
“They give us…Ahem..two pieces of bread to eat a day…sometimes a piece…of..fruit..ahem euhghgh eugghhgh…what does…the future of aged care..look like under your government?”
Nodding sympathetically as he asks for her name, Scott Morrison quickly offers some comforting words and a complete non answer.
“Well Eunice, Jenny and I have been blessed that we have a sizable pension, so we don’t have to worry about aged care.”
“I can only try and understand your problem.”
“And then I think that is the beauty of the aged care system.”
“Anyway, who’s next?”
More to come.
