As one of Betoota’s most successful corporate fat cats in moving money here and there on computers, and making dizzying profits in the process, I know better than most what it’s like to do meaningless work every day of my life.

Lately, many of my younger readers have been writing in asking me how to deal with pesky thoughts like, ‘why am I spending the majority of my life working for a soulless corporation that does nothing to better the plight of humanity?’ Or, ‘how do I find a job that is actually meaningful and helpful to more people than just myself?’

Firstly, these questions are typical coming from younger people. For some reason, over the last decade there’s been a trend amongst the computer-raised generation that a job must be more than just a job. It must speak to your values, have a higher purpose.

Which is hilarious given that we all live in a neoliberal capitalist society that values profit and nothing else but profit.

I sympathise with the misguided youth of Betoota who are yearning for meaning in their corporate work. The good news is I know a highly effective solution to help you find that higher order meaning, and you won’t have to change jobs to find it!

Here’s what you do.

Trudge along to your meaningless and mind-numbing corporate job that gives nothing back to the wider community, and sit down at your stupid desk like you always do.

Then close your eyes and take a deep breath.

Now use your still-developing brain to ignite what is called your ‘imagination’.

Imagination is something that people who are truly following their dreams and doing meaningful work use every day of their lives that are better than yours.

Use it to imagine a completely different job to the one you actually continue to do and hate. But don’t just imagine another soul-crushing corporate job. Imagine meaningful work! Work that can have a profound impact on the world and make it a better place.

It feels good hey? Your meaningful work that you’re doing in your head can mask the meaningless pencil pushing and digital money moving you’re doing in real life.

Is that a smile I see on your face? Wow, you have an excellent imagination! Great job. Keep up the meaningful work!
