Shadow Treasurer and part-time Caribbean entrepreneur Angus Taylor was spotted cheering on his West Indies in their T20 World Cup Super 8s match against England today, held in the picturesque setting of St Lucia.

The Member for Hume’s new allegiance raised eyebrows, with many wondering what had inspired this sudden burst of Caribbean spirit. Speculation quickly turned to Taylor’s controversial past involving the Cayman Islands, a well-known tax haven. It seems the shadow treasurer’s brief yet memorable stint as a director for Eastern Australia Agriculture, a company entangled in an $80 million water rights buyback, might have left him with a soft spot for the Caribbean region.

“I’ve always admired the flair and resilience of the West Indies team,” Taylor declared while sipping a piña colada, decked out in a West Indies jersey and a straw hat.

“Their spirit on the field is infectious, and let’s face it, their islands hold a special place in my heart – for more reasons than one. Wagwan lefties!”

Critics were quick to point out that Taylor’s newfound cricket enthusiasm might be an attempt to divert attention from his political controversies.

“Supporting the West Indies is the best distraction since sliced bread,” quipped an ABC politcal analyst.

“It’s like he’s batting away the tough questions with a cricket bat. Does he even know the rules?”

Meanwhile, back in Australia, cricket fans are left scratching their heads.

“First water rights, now cricket rights,” muttered one puzzled spectator.

“What’s next? A reggae album?”

More to come.
