Former deputy leader of the Liberal Party Julie Bishop used a corporate speaking event to express feeling hard done by during parts of her long political career, particularly by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
“Tony didn’t want any women in senior leadership positions in his first government,” said Ms. Bishop at the Future Women conference in Canberra this week.
“I was only in the cabinet because of my position as deputy leader, which is voted on by the party. If I hadn’t been the deputy leader, I probably would’ve been Joe Hockey’s au pair or Scott Morrison’s cleaner. Yes,” she quipped.
“However, as you all know, I acted against victims of corporate negligence and litigated asbestos victims with terminal mesothelioma. It’s a truly horrible way to die; it’s like drowning in a pool of air. I made sure they were tied up in the courts until they received nothing, and neither did their families. But my boss was a misogynistic arsehole who, despite his terrible faults and personality disorders, actively gives back to his community and is rooted firmly in service to others. So, I guess there’s that. I just went to work in a power suit and protected the rich while crushing the dying poor victims. Just because you’re dying doesn’t make you a saint! I’m looking at you, Bernie Banton!”
“George Brandis has halitosis. Anyway, I’ll just continue to enjoy my life. Back into relative obscurity I go.”
More to come.
