The rugby league world has today been rocked by a bombshell revelation about who will be the next Immortal.

Although many had expected the 14th Immortal to pretty much be a done deal, NRL insiders have confirmed that it is not who everyone is expecting.

That’s right, it can be revealed exclusively by The Advocate that the NRL are NOT going to make 2005 NRL Minor Premiership winner Nathan Hindmarsh the next Immortal.

For those who aren’t familiar with the title, the Immortals of rugby league in Australia are 13 players named as the greatest ever.

To be chosen as an Immortal is the greatest honour a player can receive and it is widely considered that to earn the accolade he needs to have changed the game or had an impact beyond his career.

While many had expected to the long awaited bestowing of Immortal status would be given to Nathan Hindmarsh, the NRL has confirmed this will not be the case.

Instead, they are reportedly giving the nod to Cameron Smith.

“Cameron changed the game,” said NRL boss Peter V’Landys.

“Not only was he the first ever Player Referee, but he broke the record for the most games played, and only fell 10 short of Ben Cummins for the most games with the whistle.”

“Sure, Hindy made 300 tackles in one game or whatever, but you can’t argue with the overarching effect Cameron made on the game.”

“Cameron also played and reffed a couple more Grand Finals in case you weren’t aware.”

Hindmarsh has yet to comment on the shocking snub, but is reportedly set to whinge about it on the Matty Johns show for the next couple of years.

Couch mates Brian Fletcher and Matty Johns are reportedly quite tickled by the snub.

More to come.
