Fresh off the back of local elections in the rest of the pesky state that envelopes them, The Australian Capital Council cast its vote over the weekend.

In the largest council election in Australia, the residents of the Canberra Shire have voted back in a Labor Mayor – marking the 7th straight win for the Red Team in the Bush Capital.

The historic victory in the large regional NSW shire was a tough blow for the Liberals and Greens, who had both held hopes of taking the top job of Lord Mayor Andrew Barr.

However, that was not to be, with Lismore boy Barr storming home, to cement his and his team’s legacy as the greatest of the salary cap era.

With Clover Moore still technically holding out a lead in terms of terms won, Barr’s concurrent and sustained period of dominance over his local council has now cemented his status.

The election also saw the tide of independents continue to rise – something which the major parties will continue to be scared of but not really do anything about.

Canberra Liberals Leader and prominent bird flipper Elizabeth Lee hit out at powerbrokers within her party, who she says have taken the Liberals further to the right.

The final makeup of the council is yet to be determined with a few divisions still in the balance.

More to come.
