With one of the proposed dates of the election (that we might just have to call ourselves) being on the weekend of the NRL Magic Round, the AEC has warned the PM that doing so may be considered Queensland voter suppression.
A new tradition in Australian sporting history, the not at all generously named NRL Magic Round takes place in Brisbane once a year, with all eight rugby league games taking place at Lang Park over one weekend.
In 2022, the NRL Magic Round will take place from Friday, May 13 to Sunday, May 15, which at the time of writing is likely to coincide with the federal election if Scotty gets round to calling it this week.
While this is not an issue for the 20 million Australians who don’t care about NRL, for the 2 million residents of Brisbane, an election during the most lively non-Ekka weekend of the year is tantamount to voter suppression – while also being a pretty un-footy thing to do.
The only NRL fanbase who do not care about this potential clash are Wests Tigers fans as they state voting in a federal election might actually be more fun than watching their team play.
Given most of that fanbase are likely to vote Labor, Morrison is reportedly weighing up his options.
More to come.
