Although many 5ams have come and gone since her high school days, Airlie Wilson says she still gets jitters thinking about a certain aspect of her younger days.

While Wilson is one of the few who generally looks back on her youth with a fond nostalgia, a particular sporting element gives her chills.

The former Betoota District Swimming Champion in Under 12’s 14s and 15s says she still can’t look at competitive swimming without getting a cold shiver run down her spine.

While the rest of the nation tunes into the swimming trials for the rapidly approaching Paris Olympics, Wilson said she’s struggling to watch the coverage.

“That god damn black line,” said Wilson to our reporter at the Betoota Heights Aldi this afternoon.

“Lord knows how many hours I spend staring at that fucking thing.”

“Up and back.”

“Up and back.”

“Long whistle”

“Short whistle.”

“Before school. After school.”

“Permanently stinking of chlorine.”

Wilson said while she loves and is in awe of the current group of swimmers stroking their stuff in Brissy, she still hasn’t quite got it in here to fully immerse herself in the couch every night.

“I’ll get there.”

“But when the flags start waving over in Europe I think.”

More to come.
