The sequel the world didn’t really need has hit cinemas this week to mixed reviews.
After the virality and success of the first instalment, the Joker film franchise has returned with the Joker: Folie à Deux.
However, in a very weird pivot, the film is pretty much a musical.
Despite the first film appealing to incels with its depiction of a down trodden man fighting back against society and getting even with all of the people who laughed at him – the new film now leans into a strong musical element.
On top of the weird musical scores littered throughout the film, it also portrays the nature of toxic celebrity culture and the actual reality and ramifications of violence within society.
Speaking to The Advocate after an exclusive screening at Betoota Hoyts, local stay at home son Phil Gerethy explained he wasn’t really taken by the whole thing.
“Dude, what the fuck was that,” said Phil after walking out.
“If I wanted to see Lady Gaga singing I’d go watch the Deep End thing.”
“This is not the film I thought I was going to see, it’s like the people behind it have forgotten the people who made this film so popular.”
“Blokes like me!”
“Now they are trying to be clever and teach us a lesson about the downsides of the misinformation and modern celebrity culture.”
