Disaster was narrowly averted this week when café customer Tim Froth almost threw his spare change away for nothing.
Recalling the close shave, property developer Tim describes the moment his fifty cents flashed before his eyes.
“It was a close call, that’s for sure. I took the coffee, and I paid for it with a tenner. When I got my change I put the $5 note in my velcro wallet and gave her a smile and a bit of a wink as I put the fifty cents into the tip jar; but as turned back to her from the jar she was already taking someone else’s order. Luckily I was able to quickly get my tip back so I could put it back in again, but this time making sure she was paying attention”.
Barista and part-time hairdressing student Carina Del Torre said she still wasn’t sure how to explain the bizarre behaviour.
“I don’t know what the hell happened. He smiled at me and dropped something into the tip jar. As soon as I turned around to take another order he emptied the jar on the counter and was sifting through the coins. He put them all back in except for a 50 cent piece and next time I saw him he was dropping it back into the jar whilst smiling at me again. Is this some sort of hidden camera prank?”
Despite the confusion, Tim is confident he handled the potentially awkward encounter well.
“Yeah, pretty pleased with how that went actually; it could have been really embarrassing” said Tim, dropping his empty cup into a planter box.
“It’s important to make a good impression whilst letting service staff know that you care about them. That’s why I put the 50 cents back in the cup and did the finger guns thing at the end.”
