The nation’s favourite sporting team is currently doing a little bit of soul searching after a tough day on the tools.

This comes after the Matildas fell 3-0 to European footballing powerhouses Germany, in their opening game of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

That disappointing result comes as a hammer blow for the Tillies medal hopes, with the loss being compounded by a sizeable hit to the for-and-against tally.

The focus now shifts to playing Zambia on Monday morning at 3am, with a win being non-negotiable if we are any hope to land automatic qualification through finishing top 2 in the group – or at worst securing one of the 2 ‘Best 3rd place spots’ available from the 3 groups.

With little time to analyse what exactly went wrong for a football team that looked a chance of winning it all at last year’s World Cup, blame has been placed on the backwater of France.

Played in Marseille rather than Paris, the Tillies loss has been put down to the fact they’ve been forced to play in a country that just doesn’t really support soccer, or football as it’s some times known.

Fresh off the back of 12 consecutive sell outs in Australia, with records tumbling pretty much every time, the Tillies were overnight forced to perform in front of a sparse crowd – pretty much made up of Aussies.

“The French just don’t get out for the soccer, and I think it really spooked the girls not playing in front of a packed house willing them on,” said one supporter on the ground in France’s 2nd biggest city.

“I think not playing in prime time also put them off a bit.”

“It’s just sad that these French hicks don’t support the game.”

“In Sydney last year, 41,000 turned out to watch France play Panama for christ sake. Allianz Stadium was pretty much sold out.”

“The French just don’t get it.”

It’s hoped a few more Aussies in Nice can get out for the game, while the rest of the country wakes up early to watch.

More to come.
