In a sad but understandable story, the King of Clay has announced his retirement today.

Rafael Nadal has revealed that he’s hanging up the racquet, after a 23-year professional career battling some of the greats of the game on his way to 22 Grand Slam Singles Titles.

After over 2 decades of persistent and lingering wedgies, the Spaniard has finally decided to call it a day.

Despite his career seemingly being over a few years ago, Nadal managed to overcome a bad run of wedgies to return to form and snag another couple of Grand Slams.

However, with the writing now on the wall, the kid from Mallorca has given up the fight against poorly elasticised leggings in his underwear and is leaving the tour.

His retirement has drawn tributes from across the sporting world, with Novak Djokovic now the last remaining member of the Big 4 standing.

The other members of the Big 4 (Murray, Djokovic and Federer) have all glowingly praised the incredible player who stormed onto Australian screens as a brash kid with relentless energy a couple of decades ago.

Speaking exclusively to The Advocate in a short interview this morning, Nadal explained the time was right.

“For me, the wedgies have become too big of a problem.”

“Big problem.”

“So, I say no more problem, and goodbye to tennis.”

“For me, it’s been an unbeliebable career, and now it’s time.”
