Wax is pouring and wicks are in high demand, as a South Coast gift shop begins working overtime in preparation for the incoming flood of Sydney’s day-trip tourists.

Local candle and nicknack boutique ‘Dusk til Dawn’, has this week poured fifteen tonnes of Vanilla and Bergamot scented soy wax, as Sydney’s linen clad yuppies prepare to inundate the region.

Store owner Julie Rick-Stein (58), said she was looking forward to selling out of her five top candles this weekend.

“Obviously lockdown has been hard for Berry and the local community, for those of us who rely on the Eastern suburbs tourist market, it’s been tough to make a buck this year.”

The store owner and avid bangle wearer said despite the presence of media moguls and North Shore boomers pricing out the lush acreages in town, nothing beats the ‘Double Bay Dollar’.

“Oh come 4pm Friday, the whole town can’t wait to hear the dulcet tones of 5,000 roaring ‘Bondi Tractors’, merging off the Princes Highway rolling into town.”

“Packed with a backseat full of snotty Pumpkin Patch brats, they’ll come and they’ll want a candle alright…”

“Even the local doughnut shop is having a crack, I heard they sold outta last cinnamon last weekend!”

When asked about the incoming boom for business, Mrs Rick-Stein said she had a few innovative scents to welcome back the harbour city day trippers.

“Last season our ‘Crushed Basil and Spiced Grapefruit’ was popular, as was our ‘Saffron and Mowed Hay.”

“But just for these Sydneysiders I’ve done a limited edition ‘Lockdown Bliss’, which is a stale fragrant mix of corn chips, indoor yoga sweat and depression.”

“I think it’s really going to take off for Christmas!”.

This week The Advocate spoke with the National Member for Gilmore, Fiona Philips, on the incoming typhoon of fat wallets soon to escape the Harbour City.

“On behalf of the South Coast and it’s extensive collection of giftware and pillow shops, I know I speak for many when I say local businesses are very excited.

“We’re really looking forward to embracing the surge in tourism and Covid cases, it’s really the shot in the arm the local economy needs to get moving again.”
