The Betoota Mutts 2nd Grade coach has started the season with a bang this week!

Rod Phillips (59) has done so by giving the 2nd graders a full noise training session to kick off the year.

With the first trial less than 6 weeks away, Rodda means business.

Treating the squad to his trademark fitness drills to begin the session, Rodda then revealed he has grand plans for the backs this year.

After watching a few set piece moves from the Irish and French, and spending a bit of time on YouTube watching backline analysis, Rodda reckons it’s time for the team to level up.

Not by replicating in game situations, but by trying to master set plays that will get used maybe 4 times a game if they’re lucky.

Despite having a scrum that went backwards on nearly every occasion last year, turning most backline plays into staggered defensive rushes, Rodda wants to particular try a move he likes to call Chocolates.

“Now, we actually used to rip this one off back when I was the first grade 10 for the Mutts,” said Rodda, referencing his glory days in the 80s.

“And we scored on pretty much every occasion,” lied the coach of a current team who can barely string the passes to together on a hands play.

“So basically what it is, 10 digs into the line, 12 runs short off him, 10 pops to full back on an out line, fullback immediately hits 13 for a wrap, 10 pops back inside in-between the 13 and the 15 and has the blind winger trailing as an inside option and the open winger holding space for a kick,” said Rodda, to a backline currently boasting a bloke whose played open side flanker his entire life lining up at 13.

“It’s really not that hard boys, and I’ll guarantee we score off it every time,” finished Rodda.

“Righto, let’s run it boys.”

“Only 6 weeks to go!”
