New Independent Senator David Pocock is really making his presence felt in Canberra today.
The new Senator for the ACT is set to begrudgingly back the new government’s Climate Change Bill in Parliament.
One of the new independents who actually has the power to influence the government, Pocock has agreed to pass the historic bill – but with a few conditions.
Admitting that there isn’t much he can do about the 43% target, Pocock has managed to secure a couple of amendments and changes to the legislation.
While there were a couple of climate-specific changes, The Betoota Advocate can exclusively reveal there is somewhat of a left-field agreement in the deal.
It’s believed that Pocock will get behind the Climate Change legislation under the premise that the federal government investigates the ‘inherent and deep-rooted Waratah bias in the Wallaby system.’
“Whether it’s a Royal Commission or just a senate inquiry, there needs to be an investigation into how so many Waratahs get picked for the Wallabies every year,” said Pocock.
“I know people will say that this doesn’t have anything to do with Climate Change, but this is a significant issue that is holding our nation back, and I’m striking while the iron’s hot.”
The formidable former backrower said the era of the Wallatahs needs to come to an end.
“Playing for Sydney University or Randwick in the Shute Shield shouldn’t automatically get you a spot in the Wallabies Squad,” continued Pocock today.
“43% emissions reductions on 2005 levels are too low, but we should be placing a lower cap on the amount of Waratahs that can feature in a Wallabies squad,” he said.
“It should be capped at 30% maximum, no matter how well the provincial team is actually doing.”
It’s believed the move caused significant pushback within political circles, with strong allegiances to Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and North Shore, but Prime Minister Albanese wasn’t particularly across the situation and agreed to the deal.
The terms of investigation are yet to be outlined, but it’s believed it will be run by a 45-year-old Queensland Reds fan with a spreadsheet proving anti-Queensland bias.
