Jockey Luke Nolen has met the end of his career behind the plastic tarp today.

The former jockey of iconic horse Black Caviar dramatically came off his horse to avoid hitting the rail after winning race one of Melbourne Cup day.

The news is bittersweet for Nolen’s owners, who were looking forward to celebrating with him after he scored an upset win with Finance Tycoon in the 1000m Darley Maribyrnong Plate.

Unfortunately, as he circled the Flemington track after saluting, Finance Tycoon began edging closer to the splintery white timber rail, causing the jockey to make an emergency dismount.

It is not yet known if he received internal injuries or broke one of his legs, however it became clear that it would have been unethical for handlers to make him walk back to the mounting yard while injured.

Despite Victoria Racing insisting that the trackside execution is what Luke Nolen would have wanted, several of the lucky trackside racegoers have reported hearing his blood curdling scream stopping abruptly with the blast of a double barrel shotgun.

MORE TO COME.
