Australia is currently cherishing our time at the top end of the 2024 Olympic medal tally, as our most dominant week of water-based sports wraps up.

With a few more golds expected in a range of different events, Australia has the potential to remain cemented near the top of the list, punching well above our weight when it comes to population.

However, the nation is used to seeing the medal tally blow out in the second week of this two-week sporting exhibition.

This is particularly noticeable when the ancient Greek sports like wrestling and archery begin.

Although Australia often has success with target-based sports, we haven’t really dominated the track and field events since our high-water mark of Cathy at the 2000 games.

Central Asian countries and Eastern Europe are now front and centre, as they fight it out for medals in those funny old timey events that are not too far removed from the Colosseum.

Unfortunately for Australia, all of our potential gold medal gladiators have been absorbed by the UFC and NRL. Our track and field program has also been competing directly with the AFL for two decades.

However, our lack of victory in these weird ancient sports will be countered by our natural flair in the very new sports like skateboarding and breakdancing. Which are actually the real test of both athletic prowess and cunning sportsmanship.
