At 6 ft 8 inches, Cessnock MP Dan Repacholi is by far the biggest unit in Federal politics. But that could change in 2025.
Labor may have found someone bigger. Which seems to be their strategy in the bush.
As one of Labor’s few regional MPs in NSW, Repacholi’s roaring physical presence means that he’s the first bloke that comes to mind when anyone discusses federal politics in the Hunter.
This strategy of only picking the biggest unit possible to run against One Nation and the Nats has proven successful in the NSW mining belt, and it appears that Labor will look to repeat that success in Far North Queensland.
This comes as the ALP rolls out the biggest fella yet. Former Cairns Taipan basketballer turned community worker, Matt ‘Tiny’ Smith chosen to represent Labor for the Federal Electorate of Leichhardt.
This bloke is seven feet tall. Two inches taller that Repacholi.
And the most haunting thing about Matt Smith is that he’s perfectly in proportion. He’s not even lanky, he’s just an incredibly large man.
With long-time Liberal MP Warren Entsch now retiring, it seems that the tip of Queensland could come back into contention. But they’d need to go BIG.
The Australian Labor Party are seeking to make significant gains in rural Australia this election, as the National Party struggles to get a word in with Peter Dutton as Coalition leader.
But with the rapid syndication of Australian media, and only Liberal-sympathising local newspapers remaining in the bush, this means they must pick candidates who naturally draw attention to themselves by simply being big hoohas.
However, they can’t just big huge. They also have to have played sport at an elite level. For Repacholi, it was Olympic shooting. For Matt Smith, it was playing center for the only professional sporting club in FNQ.
It is not known if Labor can realistically find anyone that is bigger than the most recent candidate for FNQ, otherwise Parliament House will need to start renovating their doorways and benches.
