Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in relation to a number of offences, including repeatedly moving copies of The Holy Bible to the fiction section of a South Betoota bookshop.
Punishable by up to 90 days in prison, relocating The Bible to the fantasy/fiction section of libraries and bookshops in the wider Betoota region was made illegal by a former Christian mayor in 1961 – the law still stands today.
Fenton Jacob Scoles of Rugby Road in North Betoota, was detained by special detectives from the Windorah Regional Command earlier today and was charged with multiple offences.
Released on bail a short time ago, the proud atheist spoke briefly to The Advocate outside the South Betoota Police Station about his alleged crimes.
“The Bible is fiction, I don’t get what the big deal is. It shouldn’t be illegal,” he said.
“I use religion as a litmus test for morons. Seriously, it’s so painfully obvious that there is no god and that religion is made to control people,”
“I look forward to defending myself in court.”
Mr Scoles is due back in court on the 8th of June.
