At the conclusion of their debut NRL season, the Redcliffe Dolphins have made it clear to the rest of the comp that they aren’t just any other footy club.
With the Brisbane Broncos still very much claiming the nightclubs and cafes of Brisbane’s CBD, The Dolphins have instead asserted themselves as the outdoorsy suburban siblings.
This was confirmed yesterday when the players kitted themselves out with camping and 4WDing kit and hit the sand dunes of Moreton Island with a few XXXX Golds to celebrate Mad Monday.
As the rest of the competition took to some extreme binge drinking and karaoke in discreet Sydney pubs, The Dolphins were required to meet sponsor obligations by wetting a few lines and setting up a wholesome campsite for the evening.
This is in accordance with the promises made by coach Wayne Bennett to the club’s lead sponsor Adventure Kings, an outdoor appliance and accessory retailer that obviously moves enough merchandise to Queenslanders to be able to sponsor a professional rugby league team.
After a more than impressive start to their NRL tenure, the Dolphins didn’t experience defeat until Round 4 against the Broncos – with a very narrow loss in the River City’s first ever hometown derby.
But by their first bye in Round 11, the Phins had won six of their first 10 matches – an magnificent start that was being likened to the A-League’s Western Sydney Wanderers – who made were crowned premiers in their debut season after a 14-match streak.
However, the loss of several key players to Origin resulted in a run of four losses and then another run of seven consecutive losses which saw them exit the competition at the commencement of finals play offs this week.
However, there was absolutely no tears at yesterday’s end of season celebrations, as the Dolphins boy patted themselves on the back for even having a crack.
Moreton Island rangers tell the Betoota Advocate that the Phins haven’t been any trouble at all, and the last they heard was a group singalong of Sweet Caroline.
At time of press, the Bromwich brothers were showing the boys how to not waste the eyeballs of a gutted snapper, and sucking them out of the fishhead with their mouths.
