NSW Premier Chris Minns has declared that his government will not shut down greyhound racing in his state – because he’s not as keen on pleasing Twitter’s knee-jerk policymakers as previous government’s before him.
This comes despite renewed calls from animal welfare activists to scrap the industry a damning 54-page complaint from GRNSW’s former chief vet Alex Brittan.
The complaint, paired with Dr Brittan’s resignation, has painted a damning picture of animal cruelty and insitutional indifference within the industry.
However, Minns has insisted he will be looking to reform the industry – rather than erase it.
As the Premier points out, the last bloke who tried to ban greyhound racing lost the safest nationals seat in the state over it – referencing Mike Baird’s snap decision to close the entire industry as a Liberal Premier in 2016 following an equally damning ABC Four Corner’s investigation.
Baird’s greyhound racing ban, which followed his government’s eagerly implemented nightlife lockout laws, triggered his eventual downfall as Premier following a rural NSW by-election that saw the puffer vest stronghold of Orange ditching him for the ‘Shooters, Farmers and Fishers’ candidate Phil Donato.
“And I’ve got a hell of a lot more dog tracks in Labor electorates” says Minns.
“Because working people fucking enjoy watching this shit, and it employs them, so what the fuck do you want me to do about it?”
“Scrap the whole fucking industry and hand the reigns back to far-right christian lunatics that remain in the Liberals? Or just send the cops to the tracks and try and stop these sickos from poking a gram of goey up some poor mutt’s doot?”
“That’s the best I can do. Anyone who thinks I should sacrifice my leadership and my government, and all the work we are trying to do, on the altar of this fringe fucking issue are just as delusional as the teal nerds who cheered Baird into his own kamikaze mission”
Minns also offered the activists the opportunity to put their money where their mouth is.
“Why do I keep seeing greyhound puppies in the fucking parks?”
“If you people cared about the welfare of these dogs so much you’d be rehoming the dishlickers, not buying them brand new from these lowlife breeders”
“The fact of the matter is, a lot of people fucking love this shit. And they vote. And there’s far more of people in our heartland that love this industry than there are who hate it. For fuck’s sake. Welcome to a little thing called democracy”
