The Betoota Arboretum was overwhelmed with Finnish joy this afternoon, after a group of young urban professionals took part in an ancient Nordic throwing game, as they often do after a few Stone and Woods.
With lockdown restrictions on socialising easing, parks and ovals across the country have been littered with groups of young adults picnicking in places that they haven’t visited since they were teenagers with a goon bag stashed in the Country Road duffle.
With newly re-opened pubs now enforcing one and a half hour limits on patrons, it seems picnics are back – as the only social outing where one can drink in the same seat for over 6 hours.
However, the dream of parking oneself on a picnic blanket or camping chair for an entire afternoon was crushed at one particular outdoor get-to-together today.
Prominent freelance graphic designer, Raul, from Betoota’s French Quarter wasn’t going to let his 32nd birthday descend into a ‘barbecue’ today.
That’s why he’s decided to take it up a notch, and unveil the timber crate of perfectly cylinder wooden pins.
“Anyone up for some Finska?!” shouts Raul, as he lightly jogs back from his car with the unfinished birch in hand.
“I know I said I wouldn’t bring it, but I couldn’t help myself”
“Sorry Alanis!” he says cheekily to his wife.
“Haha Adrian, you are up first. Put the tongs down now! It’s time to face the champion of upper middle class outdoor activities!”
At time of press, Raul appeared to be forgetting the rules after it became clear he was losing to Adrian by quite a noticeable margin.
