In global business news, glittering Australian tech giant Canva is set to become a $100 billion business this year, off the back of it’s continued growth in the baby shower space.
Born out of a Perth lounge room back in 2013, the startup has built global success as an online design and visual communication platform, one that let’s anyone who can move a mouse become an instant graphic designer.
Now considered one of the most valuable software startups in the world, this week the company spoke exclusively to The Advocate about its impressive trajectory of growth, and plans for the future.
Speaking to The Advocate from Canva’s flagship London office, CEO Melanie Perkins told The Advocate the explosion of the company is really all thanks to couples getting knocked up.
“There’s no secret to it really, 95% of our business comes from people designing cute little welcome signs for their baby showers.”
“There’s not a baby shower in Australia right now that doesn’t feature one of our designs, that’s been printed off at OfficeWorks, and slapped onto an art easel from Kmart.”
“Aligning ourselves to the baby and wedding business was true genius, no one’s got more time for Canva Pro than an expecting mother with an eye for design.”
Talking about the other industries that are powering Canva’s growth, the company says aligning themselves with small businesses of all shapes and sizes has certainly pushed them towards global tech behemoth status.
“There’s no doubt we’ve got small businesses on our side. Last year we saw a 30% increase in the number of Personal Trainers using it to design their next poster for a 12-week ‘Wimp To Warrior’ fitness challenge.”
“We’re also building traction in the regional pub space as well, lots of bar owners using it to announce weekly cocktail specials.”
“I’m pretty sure the Betoota Dolphins Rugby League team use it every Friday night to announce their team list. I looked into it, apparently the team’s social media manager is a 55-year-old club secretary called Graham. He’s just renewed the club’s Canva Pro subscription!”
More to come.
