A Nimbin woman who’s been living in luxury in a Balinese villa for the past eight months says she’s sick and tired of all the uncouth Aussie bogans ‘wrecking Bali for everyone’, despite the fact that she’s the one contributing to the gentrification of Ubud and pushing out locals.
Tara Bishop, 27, a digital nomad who regularly posts inspo videos on her Tik Tok encouraging Australians to move to Bali for the cheaper accommodation, says she’s frankly quite embarrassed to be an Australian whenever she sees those Gold Coast types getting publicly shitfaced and fucking around on scooters.
She speaks to our reporter over Zoom, to explain why she’s over ‘Naurists.’
“I wish there weren’t so many Australians here, they just ruin it for everyone”, says Tara, whose very existence contributes to the capitalisation of Bali, “they just don’t appreciate the culture.”
Despite saying this, Tara isn’t really that interested in Indonesian culture either; preferring to live in a privileged bubble with other expats so she doesn’t have to see the shocking disparity in wealth.
Interestingly, Tara made the move to Bali because she too knows what it’s like to be displaced by wealthy people, having had her hometown Nimbin flooded with out of towners which made it no longer affordable for her to rent in.
“Anyway, sorry to cut the interview short, but I forgot I have massage booked at 12pm!”, says Tara, giving Effie an apologetic smile, “can you believe an hour only twenty bucks here?”
