A local bloke has finally managed to tick an international bestseller off his reading list today as he waits to board a Jetstar flight to Melbourne.
Flying from Betoota Airport to Tullamarine on Jetstar’s JQ569 service, high school geography teacher Ryan Foster-Stephens told The Advocate lengthy delays inspired him to try and catch up on reading ‘A Little Life’ by Hanya Yanagihara.
“I got a text as soon as I put my bags through that there was a 45-minute delay, of course that was just the entree Jetstar served up to lower my overall expectations,” said Ryan, as he helped himself to an $8 packet of chocolate freckles sitting on the shelf.
“Once I got to the departure gate they gave us the obligatory ‘mechanical issues’ delay, and then some other thing about bad weather in Victoria. As soon as I realised it was just going to be one of those flights, I parked up here at W.H Smith and started reading.”
Now three quarters through Yanagihara’s intense and emotionally charged 736 page epic, Ryan told our reporter he was glad to not waste his airport time running his phone battery down or experimenting with different colognes.
“I know it was going to be a hefty read, I heard it was heart-breaking at times,” said Ryan, as he wiped snotty tears from his eyes with a travel pillow hanging on a nearby accessory rack.
“To be honest, it sort of mirrors the pain of waiting for this Bogan Missile to take off. One more delay and I might as well make a start on ‘Where The Crawdad’s Sing’, I haven’t had time to give that on a crack either.
More to come.
