A junior consultant at McKinsey’s Betoota office has identified that many of the senior men he answers to are really into golf—which means he needs to be if he stands any chance of getting his career in the fast lane.
So last week, almost a decade since he last swung a club, Darcy Dollarhyde went to the driving range.
The 23-year-old told The Advocate that it went well. That his natural talent for cricket has translated somewhat well into the game of golf.
“So I went for a fitting on Friday last week because I mentioned in passing to one of the partners I’m trying to get under that I have been getting back into golf. He told me to go and get fit for clubs, so I went and got fit for clubs,” he said.
“It worked. I told him I went and got fit, and he was, in his own words, very excited,”
Darcy said that partners and even the odd senior partner are beginning to nod at him. Some smile.
“This afternoon, just before our mixed touch game against UBS, the same partner comes over and asks me how the fitting went. He seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say, which was weird. He asked me where I play. I told him Lake Betoota Municipal, and he laughed. Told me that I should come and join him and the boys at Royal Betoota. That’d be nice,” he said.
“I can’t believe it worked this well. It took an hour of reading golf news on the bus to work this morning, and I’m conversational in golf. I told him I went with the Ping i230s. From 5 down to Pitching. Went with the ‘Glide’ wedges and another Ping hybrid, wood, and a low-spin driver. All Ping. I even got a Ping bag. You should’ve seen his face. It was like those YouTube videos where the white fella speaks these uncommon languages in front of native speakers, and their eyes light up,”
“Anyway, he told me they’re trying to get Lockheed Martin over the line with some Navy contracts, and they’re heading to Melbourne next month. He’s going to try and manufacture a way for me to come. Why? Because they’re playing the Melbourne sandbelt courses. Whatever that means,”
“All I need to do now is learn to play.”
More to come.
