A classic episode of “The Haves vs. The Have Nots” is playing out in the summer Tennis camp at South Betoota Public School today as some kids break for lunch.
Sitting under the recently built shade shelter, the students of Trent Clark’s tennis program have begun opening up their lunchboxes to see what’s meant to get their developing brains through the day.
Whilst some kids unwrap homebrand muesli bars, and the anxious kids with helicopter parents start to munch on slices of apple smothered in peanut butter, one kid has wowed his class with an affluent collection of snacks.
Opening his blue Smash lunch box to reveal a chicken and slithered almond sandwich on sourdough, a packet of soy crisps, a peach and a whole red bag of Baby Bel cheeses, Hudson Wilkerbottom (10) began unpacking a spread worth over $20.
“Jeez what do your parents do, I only get Baby Bel’s on my birthday,” mentioned one kid Drake Hardy, who was jealous of Hudson’s pretty ritzy lunch.
“Yeah like my parents won’t even let me have them when Mum puts them on a cheeseboard,” said another classmate, as she pulled the foil off a cheese Le Snack.
Given a bag of mini-bels cost upwards of $6, it’s no wonder that Hudson comes from a family where both parents are Doctors.
“Are these things fancy, we’ve got them in our fridge all the time,” said Hudson, as he unwrapped the soft cheese from its waxy cocoon.
“They’re alright but they’re nothing like the cheese you get in France, have you guys never skied in Val Thorens before?”
More to come.
