“It’s a surprisingly zen activity,” she said.

“Deciding which relatives you’re going to make a millionaire. I know which ones I wouldn’t help out. I would buy a massive house but my Dad said that’s half the problem with being rich. You end up living in rich people suburbs and they’re almost always the world people in the world. First against the wall, they would be. That’s what my Dad says.”

On the way home from her job working as an assistant to our town’s mayor, Councillor Keith Carton, a French Quarter woman has told The Advocate that she’s joined almost half the country in buying a ticket in this week’s $100m Powerball jackpot.

“Gambling is a tax on stupid people,” said Sacha Smith.

Ms Smith spoke to our reporter on the D45 electric trolley bus from Venice Street Central to Betoota Heights this afternoon.

“Money is hard enough to come across. Why would you give it to some multinational that funnels the profits overseas? You’ve got millions on young men, wagering billions each year, only for it to end up in the back pocket of some fat old prick in Monaco or something. Shameful. The government should do something about it but wet noodle Albanese is scared of his own shadow these days. The other guy, the corpse that speaks, he won’t be around long enough to do anything. Anyway, what were we talking about?”

“Oh yeah, Powerball is different. It’s a bit of fun. I know I’m not going to win but if I did, there will be some changes around here. There will be blood! Just kidding! I’d buy a nice house and my parents could come and live with me. I’d pay off my brother’s mortgage. I dunno, really. Can you have a hundred rocks in your Everyday Saver? I’d have to send an email to Barefoot and get his two cents,”

“That sicko would probably tell me to keep going to work [laughs] Actually, that’s what I’d do. I’d tell my boss to go and get fucked. Keith would respect that, I reckon. He hates working as much as the next public servant.”

More to come.
