In what can only be described as a classic case of misguided optimism, Tom Finch (27) moved to Melbourne six months ago from Queensland in search of “a change” but is now just cold and wet and in a different state.
Ruling out Sydney as “way too expensive,” Tom settled on Melbourne, believing it would be an incrementally more affordable and equally dynamic option. “I thought I’d like it, but the weather? I can’t deal with it,” he said, shaking his head.
What was supposed to be a fresh start quickly became a daily battle against Melbourne’s infamous weather. “I honestly thought the weather was exaggerated, but no, it’s really like this,” Tom said pensively in a cafe in the city, staring at his latte that was now lukewarm. “I moved here to find something more, but all I’ve found is constant cold and the vague sense that I’ve made a huge mistake.”
Suddenly, the sun started shining. In a rare moment of optimism. “Maybe this isn’t so bad,” he thought, watching the weather shift to a brief, hopeful sunshine. “I mean, at least it’s not raining right now.”
However, the moment he stepped outside, the sky seemed to conspire against him. Torrential rain poured from the heavens, and Tom fumbled with his bag in a desperate search for an umbrella.
“Fuck, I forgot my umbrella,” Tom muttered, drenched within seconds. The city’s grey skies had won again.
